Mr. Milton McKinney

THE POWER OF WORKING TOGETHER

The story of Mr. Milton McKinney’s success is a testament to the power of organizations working to help address someone experiencing homelessness. With support and resources provided by the Coalition for the Homeless, McKenna House, Central Union Mission, So Others Might Eat Center for Employment Training, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and Navy Federal Credit. He managed to turn his life around.

On April 3, 2023 after serving a six-month jail term for an altercation, Mr. McKinney found himself without a place to call home, and sleeping on park benches. Prior to going to jail, he had a home and dedicated two years of his life as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Fortunately, he learned about McKenna House, which led him to Central Union Mission and eventually in September 2023, to the Webster House Transitional Housing Program operated by the Coalition for the Homeless,

Despite his challenges, Mr. McKinney remained determined to improve his circumstances and take control of his future. He completed an 8-month job training program at the Employment Training Center at So Others Might Eat, never missing a training day.  His hard work and dedication paid off when he was offered a full-time position as an Orthopedic Medical Assistant at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He began his new job on March 18, 2024.

Mr. McKinney’s goal is to secure his own place and pursue a career in nursing. Having already received an associate degree puts him ahead of the curve. Thanks to a Navy Federal Credit Union grant, he can purchase the shoes and other items he needs for his new job.

Mr. McKinney’s story serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and the support of others, success can be attained even in the face of adversity. His journey underscores the importance of not losing hope and believing in oneself. He offers this advice to others facing challenges: “Don’t give up on yourself. You are not what you are going through. Tough times don’t last; tough people do.”
