Development Director

Sheila Baker brings 47 years of dedicated experience in the nonprofit sector, with expertise in administration, fundraising, project management, workforce development, economic development, and special events.

She currently serves as Director of Development for the Coalition for the Homeless, where she has spent the past 17 years strengthening fundraising efforts that support programs serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Before her current role, Sheila served as Development Director at the Alzheimer’s Memory Center, where she led fundraising initiatives to support individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Her extensive career also includes a range of leadership and program management roles with the Northern Virginia Urban League. There, she served as Executive Assistant to the CEO, Assistant Project Director of the South Fairfax Business Resource Center, Project Coordinator for the Interagency Consortium on Adolescent Pregnancy, and Assistant Director of the Alexandria Resource Mothers Project, a program supporting pregnant and parenting teens, including those experiencing homelessness.

She also served as Director of the Atlanta Women’s Business Center. In this U.S. Small Business Administration initiative, she designed and led programs providing counseling, business management support, technical assistance, and helping women entrepreneurs gain access to capital.

The Homeless Services Hotline is open every day from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.

If you are in need of free, accessible transportation to shelter, or you see someone outside in need of shelter or a welfare check, call the Homeless Services Hotline at (202) 399-7093 or dial 311. If there is an immediate risk to safety, call 911. When calling, please include the time, the address or location of the sighting, and a description of the person’s appearance. 

During hypothermia season (November 1 - March 31), the Homeless Services Hotline is open 24 hours a day and transportation to shelter is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
